Getting Oriented

What is the Lone Soldiers Program?

Nefesh B'Nefesh-FIDF Lone Soldiers Program is a nonprofit organization, not part of the IDF. We advocate for Lone Soldiers, answer questions, and offer guidance before, during, and after their service. We're here for parents too, with our own community and events.

IDF Lone Soldier Department

IDF Lone Soldier Department (Merkaz HaBodedim) is the IDF's own department for Lone Soldiers — a resource for soldiers and parents from before the draft through release. If something isn't being resolved through your child's Mashakit Tash (welfare soldier), Merkaz HaBodedim is the next step.

Your Child's Welfare Officer

Every Lone Soldier has a Mashakit Tash — a welfare soldier in their base or unit who handles day-to-day questions about rights, benefits, and leave. This is usually the first person your child should go to.

Planning a Visit to Israel

Parents can visit during their child's service, and Lone Soldiers can travel home. Subsidized flights and vacation days make it possible for your child to visit you, and special leave lets you visit them in Israel. Reach out to our Parents Coordinator to help plan around your child's schedule.

Common Questions

Answers for Parents

A Lone Soldier is an IDF soldier without immediate family living in Israel. This includes Olim, Mahal volunteers, and Israelis whose immediate family lives abroad.

No. NBN-FIDF is not part of the IDF and does not recruit soldiers. We support Lone Soldiers who are already serving, offering guidance, benefits information, and a personal advisor.

Phone calls and messaging apps are usually available. Contact may be limited during training or field exercises — this is a normal part of army life.

Many parents do. Subsidized flights, such as through Operation Hug, and family visit days can make a trip possible. Reach out to our Parents Coordinator to plan around your child’s schedule.
