Army Preparation Courses for Olim Chadashim

Pre Army

Before beginning your IDF service, you may be assigned to one of several preparation courses designed specifically for Olim Chadashim. These programs help new immigrants strengthen their Hebrew, become familiar with Israeli society and military life, and prepare for a successful army service.

The course you attend depends on your Hebrew level, assignment, and the IDF’s placement process.

Army Hebrew Course (Michvei Alon)

Olim Chadashim with a low Hebrew level, as determined during the Tzav Rishon, are required to begin their military service with a three-month Army Hebrew Course at the Michvei Alon base.

The course is designed to provide the Hebrew skills needed to succeed in the IDF while introducing participants to military life.

The program includes:

  • Three months of Hebrew instruction
  • One month of basic training (Tironut)
  • Preparation for continued military service

Combat soldiers will continue with advanced basic training after joining their assigned unit. Non-combat soldiers may be required to repeat basic training, depending on their placement.

Toward the end of the course, participants meet with a placement officer who determines their military assignment.

When is the course held?

The Army Hebrew Course takes place three times each year:

  • December
  • March/April
  • August

These sessions precede the March, August, and November draft cycles.

Course Moledet

Course Moledet (“Heritage Course”) was established in 2013 and is held several times each year at Michvei Alon.

The course is intended to help eligible Olim Chadashim prepare for military service while strengthening their connection to Israeli society, culture, and heritage.

Who attends Course Moledet?

For soldiers assigned to combat-support positions:

  • Offered in March, July, and November
  • Seven weeks long
  • Open to both men and women

For soldiers assigned to combat positions:

  • Offered in February and October
  • Five weeks long
  • Designed for male combat recruits

The course prepares participants both mentally and physically for military service.

How are candidates selected?

Eligible candidates participate in a short interview at the Lishkat Giyus (Recruitment Office).

During the interview, candidates are asked about their connection to Israel and their motivation to serve in the IDF. Those who meet the program’s criteria are invited to participate in the course.

Does Course Moledet Affect Army Placement?

No. Course Moledet does not replace or interfere with the IDF’s placement process.

After completing the course:

  • Soldiers who have already received a placement continue to their assigned unit.
  • Soldiers who have not yet received a placement will meet with a placement officer. Their overall performance during the course may be taken into consideration during the placement process.

What Will You Learn?

Throughout the course, participants take part in educational activities that introduce them to Israeli society and military life.

The program includes:

  • Tours throughout Israel
  • Visits to museums, theatres, and government buildings
  • Jewish heritage studies
  • Israeli culture
  • The structure of the Israeli government
  • Tools and skills for adapting to military life
  • Completion of Basic Training (Level 02)

Can I Skip Course Moledet and Attend Course Nativ Instead?

No. Placement in Course Moledet is determined following your interview at the Lishkat Giyus. Soldiers who are assigned to the course cannot receive an exemption.

However, soldiers who wish to participate in Course Nativ may do so later during their military service.
